Job Description Summary

The Sales Manager (SM) is responsible for researching and successful solicitation of business from a targeted market for groups between ten (10) and thirty (30) on peak night or as assigned by Director of Group Sales, or Director of Sales & Marketing, for the Royal Sonesta New Orleans. Once the group arrives, the salesperson maintains his relationship by efficient and courteous follow-through, thereby increasing our opportunities to rebook this business at the hotel. To perform duties and maintain professional job posture at all times. Sales Manager will be representative of the caliber of the Royal Sonesta New Orleans.

Job Description


  • Meet or exceed weekly, quarterly and annual sales goals, targets and initiatives.
  • Develop, actively solicit, and map group business accounts per defined territory.
  • Participate in daily business review meeting, pre-convention meetings, training and other sales-related meetings as required.
  • Adhere to all of the various written mandatory standards of operations, policies and procedures, manuals, memos, oral instructions, etc., all of which go to make up the essential functions of the job.
  • Perform all other duties and Standard Operating Procedures as directed by the DOM/DOGS.
  • Maintain a complete database of accounts in defined territories.
  • Identify and qualify potential prospects through participating in telemarketing, tradeshows, sales blitzes and other sales initiatives.
  • Prepare correspondence to customers, internal booking reports and file maintenance.
  • Maximize outcome of all sales initiatives by following up on leads, following up with clients in-house to identify additional business opportunities and aggressively managing accounts.
  • Work with other departments within the hotel to provide quality service to customers and that all details are communicated for to ensure a successful meeting experience.
  • Attend trade shows, community events and industry meetings.
  • Develop/maintain knowledge of market trends, competition and customers.
  • Conduct site inspections for prospective clients. Entertain clients during their visit to the Royal Sonesta New Orleans.
  • Professionally represent the hotel in community and industry organizations and events.
  • Participate as team player with all departments.
  • Perform in a manner that demonstrates the code of ethics of Sonesta International in a professional manner to clients, potential clients, employees and guests at every opportunity.
  • Maintain customer relations, GSO relations, trade relations, industry relations and staff relations.
  • Submit quarterly SMART Plans & Development Goals, and yearly Market Place Action Plans.

Education and/or Experience:            

  • Two years or more related experience in sales work at a conference hotel.
  • Must have experience in "cold call" solicitation, contract closing, site inspections/visits with clients, setting up fam trips and contract negotiations.
  • Remain current with all pertinent computer software programs and equipment
  • Have working knowledge of all departments, the Hotel and its amenities.
Preferred Education:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in business, communications, or hotel management preferred

Language Skills:   

Required to have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Sales Manager must have the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.          

Mathematical Skills:

  • Required to have the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages.
  • As well as budgetary analysis capabilities required. 

Computer Skills:

Must possess computer skills, including, but not limited to, accounting programs, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Opera and Delphi.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
